P1. When someone breaks a leg bone, they use crutches to move around

Thanksgiving's Date Should Move

I wanted to find a Thanksgiving related argument, and came up with something fascinating.

P1. Thanksgiving is held in November
P2. The first Thanksgiving was held in October

C. We should move Thanksgiving from November to October, and move Halloween from October to November.

I did a bit of research, and found out that All Hallows Eve - or Halloween - actually takes place on November 1st. So the switch would actually make sense.

Skyrim

So on the 11th of this month, the next game in the Elder Scrolls series was released - Skyrim.

Since then, I have made the following discovery.

P1. The majority if my friends on facebook mentioned how much they love Skyrim
P2. The guy at Gamestop said that all he has heard all day from customers is "Skyrim"

Frozen Fish

Logic from around 11 years ago.

P1.When something in water gets too cold, it freezes.
P2. When something frozen gets to hot, it melts.
P3.My brother accidentally froze his pet fish

Management

Here is my essay topic in argument form.

P1. Many people do not judge managerial qualities equally in men and women.
P2. There are gender differences in managerial style, but they don't add up to evidence that one gender is better than the other.

C. You can not judge the quality of managers based on their gender.

Suggestions?  Thoughts?

Grandpa?

So this is kind of like the "a tree falls in a forest, but nobody was there to see it, did it make a sound?" question...

P1. I am my father's daughter.
P2. My father is his father's son.
---
I am the granddaughter of my father's father.

Right? But my father's father died when my father was in his teens. I'm named after him in fact! But because I never met him, what do I call him? Logically and biologically, he IS my grandpa, but since I never met him, I sometimes call him "your dad", "dad's dad" or "Sam". But is that right? Should I call him "grandpa"? What's your opinion?

Schmesier vs Monsanto

I had to write about this for my Microeconomics class. It’s an argument between a farmer and the company Monsanto and their GMO (genetic modified organisms) canola.

P1. The canola was planted in Schmeriser’s neighboring farmers fields after making an agreement with Monsanto (patented).

P2. Because of a storm, the canola got onto Schmeiser’s field and destroyed everything.

P3. Schmeiser did not make an agreement with Monsanto to have any canola on his field.

C. Monsanto can sue Schmeiser for having their canola on his field.

And sue Monsanto did. Even though Schmeiser didn't want the seeds on his field and he didn't willingly let them on the field, Monsanto still sued them. Good news is that Schmeiser came out on top, but more events with the company happened latter. That's another story for another time.

Realism in Video Games

P1. Many video games have tried to place realism in it

P2. When a person gets shot in real life, they are either killed or at least incapacitated

P3. In Call of Duty, your character only bleed out of his eyes, and damage rarely permanent when he is shot.

C. Video games can never be fully realistic.

I've never been much of a shooter fan, but I have seen some people play them. I've brought this point up with friends from my past. What would happen if the person in the video game was like a real person. The answer I got was: that would take the fun out of the game. You would always die whenever you get shot so you would only get one chance before GAME OVER. I see their point, since the point of video games isn't to show realism, but to let the players have fun.

Effective Executives

"This book rests on two premises:

P2. Effectiveness can be learned"

The conclusion that I came up with was something along the lines of: the executive's job can be learned. However, the article I found this in was talking about how effectiveness cannot be learned but has to be experienced.

What's up with that?
